Tawxeed (التوحيد) is a commitment of the heart to the one true source of life in order to safeguard the integrity and well-being of the individual and prevent soul loss and fragmentation from seeking life and safety in many different places.
Tawxeed comes from the root word waxada (و ح د) which means to unite, integrate, make into one. It entails gathering one’s scattered focus in one direction and to replace the attachments to representations of the divine with the divine directly. It’s to ensure the sovereignty of the heart by submitting the mind to its limitations and preventing the ego from trying to override the human limitations which would throw the psyche off balance.
And keep yourself (O Muhammad sallAllaahu calayhi wasallam) patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His Face, and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, one who follows his own lusts and whose affair (deeds) has been lost.
Thus; losing one’s focus is like cutting the strings on a necklace causing the beads to scatter. One loses one’s wholeness.
