The greatest tragedy is that the marginalized reject empathy because they’ve come to associate pain with humiliation and powerlessness. In so doing, they refuse to deepen into what would actually burn away their shackles and transmute the prism of power that they view themselves through.
How unfortunate that those most afflicted can be the most callous. When someone with hardened wounds reach for power under the pretext of liberation, they do nothing but take away the flow of life. Most desire power and wealth to numb their humanity, so how can anyone lead a people to liberation when humanity is innate to us??
If anything, this is why scarcely any revolution or uprising has had any healing. It’s only a cosmetic change to tyranny. When we refuse to feel our pain, when we criticize and hate ourselves for our experiences, we’re sowing seeds of tyranny.
