A long walk

Somalis are a proof from Allaah against any Arab supremacist who thinks their proximity to the language of God makes them the carriers of His words. It’s an irony of cosmic proportion that a black people, Africans, revere and uphold the Qur’aan better than any other nation, Arab or otherwise. It’s ironic because it shows how the deen has nothing to do with what you memorize or what your primary language is. It’s a gift from Allaah and He honours whomever He wishes. The fact of the matter is that we have more Africans devout to memorizing and learning and teaching the deen in Somalia, Kenya, Senegal, Mauritania, Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, The Gambia, Mayotte, Benin, Tanzania, Comoros, than anywhere else.

African Muslims have made peace with not being acknowledged because they didn’t gravitate towards the deen by any political or sociological incentives. I mean, if your primary language is Arabic it’s easy to blur the lines of the divine nature of the deen by taking it for granted and almost feeling entitled to it because it’s blended in with your culture. Also, many countries use the deen as a form of mass control, which is blasphemous to say the least. But it’s a macrocosmic expression of the entitlement that sprouts when the spiritual aspect is removed and thus the compassion and empathy that arises through recognizing our shared struggles as humans.

I really wonder what goes on in the minds of those who have decided that the best and most effective way of teaching people the deen is through restrictions and refutations and an unhealthy focus on what and who is wrong. Those who skip past the process of living and embodying the deen, of disseminating it organically usually do so because the uncertainty and lack of control exposes the ego and that doesn’t feel nice. Many become distant from Allaah by doing things they think are pleasing to Him. When you lose sight of the forest for the trees, the journey for the destination, the growth for the goals, then you’ve shifted the pivot from where Allaah intended : a heart based existence.

The heart is the only part of our being capable of balancing the ebb and flow of life as well as communicating the soul’s needs. It’s in the heart that a spiritual homeostasis is achieved and retained. When you’re out of alignment with that space, your ego takes over because that’s how the laws of the universe go : a cosmic rebalance of polarities. But Allaah doesn’t watch that. He judges your heart and how aligned or misaligned it is to the path you’re walking.

Whosoever desires honour, power and glory then to Allaah belong all honour, power and glory [and one can get honour, power and glory only by obeying and worshipping Allaah (Alone)]. To Him ascend (all) the goodly words, and the righteous deeds exalt it (the goodly words i.e. the goodly words are not accepted by Allaah unless and until they are followed by good deeds), but those who plot evils, theirs will be severe torment. And the plotting of such will perish.
