{When Our Verses (of the Qur’an) are recited to him he says: “Tales of the ancients!}¹

{Nay! But their hearts were made impenetrable by the evil they used to do.}

{Nay! Surely they will be veiled from their Lord that Day}

{ Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.}

 {Then, it will be said to them: “This is what you used to deny!}

The only way to find pleasure in having no integrity is by rejecting everything that calls for integrity. Because your heart requires you to be pervious to the universal truths in order for you to be in sync with it, you’ll have to shut your heart – meaning, your conscience and intuition – off, like an alarm clock.

This conscious decision is what will blind you to Allaah, the divine light and source of all the universal truths. If you were impervious to His signals and signs, then you’ve severed all ties and burnt all bridges in your hereafter. This ultimate rejection is worse than hell, because it’s the cause of hell. It’s therefore mentioned before Hellfire is mentioned.

Hellfire is the embodiment of all suffering and depression and panic and dread.
It’s not something we are thrown into as much as it is a place we’ve attracted by pushing away all the lessons that would teach us how to build a ladder to heaven, and postponing feeling any distress until death.

Hedonism and being a slave to your sensory delights comes at a steep price; your consciousness that would make you alert to the universal classroom we are in. The harsh consequences we face by not enforcing boundaries with toxic people for instance, or the health problems that come with comfort eating and sedentary lifestyle, are microcosmic demonstrations of the universal checks and balances. Call it karma or what you will, suffering is a sign that something big is amiss within and we’re ignoring our feelings that are desperately trying to warn us like pain sensations warn us of bodily dysfunction.

Many see hellfire as this arbitrary punishment by God for not listening. By framing it that way, one might put the blame on God and escape all sense of responsibility because that’d require integrity. It’s not easy facing the fact that you’re wholly responsible and in control of your life and destiny. Allaah doesn’t make you go through something you haven’t attracted vibrationally. It’s His justice that we are given free will – for good or bad. Divine punishment doesn’t come about because we’ve fallen short of some points. Allaah is the Most Merciful, Most Gentle, Most Gracious,Most Forgiving. Anything good we achieve or realize is only by His aid. He wants us to achieve, more than our own parents! However the basis of a good standing with Allaah in the akhirah is vulnerability.

You don’t need to flex or aim for perfection. Allaah created you to be imperfect. Gunning for perfection is gunning to be divine. There’s nothing you can bring to the table that would impress Allaah. He knows who you are deep down and what you go through. The only thing He requires of you is to keep your heart open to the truth, regardless of how deep in shit you are. Sinning is chronic, just like getting ill is inevitable. That’s not the issue. The issue is to be true to who Allaah knows you to be in the cover of the dark, when no one is around, when there’s no tempting opportunity. Will you be more cognizant of what people think of you or what Allaah knows of you?

Being vulnerable means being self-accepting of yourself and not trying to outmaneuver life by avoidance or denial. It’s to love unconditionally, believe blindly, trust completely and hope defiantly. It’s to be focused on the process regardless of the outcome. It’s to seek Allaah’s Face regardless of what He’ll do to you in the hereafter.

I say regardless, because in having faith in the unknown you have to have trust that Allaah is Just and Merciful. That He won’t fail you as long as you keep true to yourself and your hustle for the truth. Without trust, there’s doubt. With doubt, faith shrivels.
